In 1919 Schönberg founded the Private Concert Society (or more accurately, the Society for Private Musical Performances) in which Alban Berg and Anton Webern both played active roles. It was a private association created to freely present, with no ties or obstacles whatsoever, the music the Society’s founders considered interesting: from Mahler onward. The Society followed a set of very strict rules: it was not open to the public, only members and the occasional guest could attend; there was no previous publicity of the concert programs, so that audiences would come with open minds; neither applause nor any expression of approval or disapproval was permitted so as not to color the opinion of others in the audience; and, obviously, critics were not allowed entry in order to avoid subsequent influence. Until the time it dissolved due to lack of funds, the Society organized a total of 133 concerts.
